That's what this article hopes to achieve! However, if you're new to image-editing, or specifically to GIMP, then you may need a gentle pointer in the right direction. It's not difficult to learn these skills, and once you've done it a few times it becomes second-nature. Knowing how to resize images in GIMP, and resizing the canvas and various layers, is one of the most basic skills you need for image manipulation. ![]() But even that doesn't actually feed the soil. Savvy gardeners will purchase a powdered form of the bacteria-called an 'inoculant'-and roll their pea and bean seeds around in it before planting to insure that the symbiosis takes place. When the roots of the right kind of plant-like clover, peas and string beans-encounter the bacteria, the plant can use some of the nitrogen in the air to feed itself. But most plants can't access this rich food, and even the ones that can need the help of specific groups of bacteria that live in the soil. Nitrogen makes up the vast majority of the air we breathe-a lusty 78%, in fact. Growing nitrogen-fixing plants doesn't automatically increase the fertility of your soil. But most gardeners-including Carol-misunderstand the process. Clovers and other legumes have the potential to form a symbiotic relationship with organisms in the soil that allow the plants to actually use some of the nitrogen in the air we breathe as plant food-"fixing" the nitrogen in their actual cells. ![]() The fresh 'wet green' Nitrogen-rich young plants essentially provide 'food' for the process.Īnd if these plants were clovers and not wood sorrel they'd be the BEST weeds to add, because of that nitrogen-fixing thing-right? Those shredded leaves are the 'dry brown/carbon-rich' component that actually becomes the bulk of the finished compost. One of the oldest bits of organic gardening advice is to add handfuls of finished compost or good soil to the ingredients as you build the pile to get things cooking.Ĭompost 101: Basic green plants are good sources of nitrogen for the pile-especially important if that pile is, as we urge every year at the time, composed of lots of fall leaves that you've collected and shredded. Now, why specify keeping lots of soil attached to the roots when you compost the unwanted plants? Because the soil attached to those roots is teeming with microbial life that will help get the carbon and nitrogen in the compost pile (or bin) dancing faster. Some weeds are especially good at improving the finished compost-like dandelions, whose roots contain a lot of calcium.īut this weed isn't one of the especially good ones. Carol in Pennsbury Township in Southern Chester County (near Kennett Square PA)Īctually, the non-smarty pants answer is that this and other weeds can enrich the soil-if they're pulled out of the ground with lots of soil attached to their roots while still young (before they can flower and potentially go to seed) and added to a compost pile. Does wood sorrel provide any such soil enhancement? I hadn't been vigorously weeding it out because I thought it was clover and its root nodules were fixing nitrogen and enriching my soil. I now suspect it is wood sorrel ( oxalis). I have had a 'clover-looking' growth invading my vegetable garden for a very long time. Okra can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and, once blanched and cooled, can be frozen for up to 6 months.Q. You can lengthen the harvest period by picking daily. You can tell if the pod is still tender enough to eat by snapping of the tip – if the tip comes off readily, then it’s all good to go! Otherwise, if left on the bush, they can become fibrous and tough. It’s best to pick okra when the pods are young, 5-8 cm (2-3 1/2 in). Flowers appear within 12-14 weeks and the seed pods follow very shortly thereafter, within days. It can also be grown in large containers. As the plant is prone to stem rot, water sparingly around the plant rather than over it. It can be sown from seed now through to early summer in cool and warm climates all year in tropical areas. Okra prefers full sun and well-drained soil, neither over- nor under-fertilised. Related to cotton, hibiscus and cacao, okra is from the mallow (Malvaceae) family and can tolerate growing in very hot temperatures. Okra is packed with vitamins and essential minerals and is a good source of dietary fibre. Okra can be pickled, used in a New Orleans gumbo or Middle Eastern stew, lightly cooked in a Vietnamese stir-fry, coated in Indian spices and fried, or prepared Mediterranean-style with tomatoes, garlic and a squeeze of lemon juice. The large, lush leaves are also edible – especially when young – and can be cooked similarly to spinach. The seed pods, when sliced and cooked for a long time, give off a sticky juice that is excellent for thickening soups and stews. The flower has white or cream-coloured petals and its throat is a deep claret red. Okra (or lady fingers) are easy to grow and its flowers and fruit can add both ornamental and edible value to your garden. One of the first skins created for the Galil. Haller said in his letter that the university's hearing to determine whether Tucker violated the relationship violence and sexual misconduct policy at Michigan State will continue even though Tucker is being fired. "The unprofessional and unethical behavior is particularly egregious given that the Vendor at issue was contracted by the University for the sole purpose of educating student-athletes on, and preventing instances of, inappropriate sexual misconduct," he wrote. ![]() Tucker also violated the "moral turpitude" clause of his contract and harmed the school's public image, Haller said. Tucker's contract said he must "keep positive and constructive in tone any public comments about University policies." In the statement, Tucker called a pending hearing about sexual harassment claims a "sham." Haller also noted a combative public statement Tucker issued through his attorney last Monday as another example of him breaking his contract. He wrote that Tucker's admission that he commented on Tracy's body, made frequent flirtatious comments to her and masturbated while on the phone with her were all breaches of Tucker's contract and gave Michigan State grounds to fire Tucker for cause. Haller explained the university's argument for firing Tucker with cause in a letter addressed to Tucker and his agent. Longtime MSU assistant Harlon Barnett has already been elevated to interim coach, and he's being aided by former longtime Spartans coach Mark Dantonio in a consultant role. Messages to Tucker and his agent were not immediately returned. Tracy declined to comment via her attorney. Tucker has more than $79 million remaining on his contract, which the school is attempting to not pay him with the firing for cause. Michigan State made clear in the letter that it was firing Tucker for cause unless he can "present sufficient reasons to dispute" the grounds for termination in the next seven days. Because she had an ongoing professional relationship with the athletic department, she was able to file a claim under the school's sexual misconduct policy. Tracy told USA Today that after she raised concerns about Tucker's conduct, he postponed and eventually canceled a speaking engagement at the university. Tucker admitted to masturbating, but said in a statement last week that it was part of a consensual intimate relationship. She said Tucker also masturbated without her consent during a phone call in April 2022. She claims that Tucker made unwelcome advances after she was hired to speak to the Spartans football team about sexual misconduct and her experience as a rape survivor. Prominent sexual assault awareness speaker Brenda Tracy filed a sexual misconduct complaint against Tucker in December 2022. An independent investigator hired by the school has been examining the allegations since January, and Tucker's suspension came after the specific allegations arose in media reports. Tucker has been suspended without pay after sexual harassment allegations emerged in media reports last weekend. Michigan State delivered the notice in a five-page letter from athletic director Alan Haller, which details what the university sees as "unprofessional and unethical behavior." ![]() ![]() Michigan State University informed head football coach Mel Tucker in a letter Monday of the school's "intent to terminate" his contract for cause, citing "a body of undisputed evidence of misconduct that warrants termination." When it’s time to remove your press-ons, she recommends skipping acetone-based nail polish removers - which can dehydrate and weaken your nails - and using warm, soapy water or cuticle oil to weaken the adhesive instead. "Polish can absolutely be protective and it is generally the removal process that leads to the dehydration and potential damage," she says. Stern suggests applying a coat of clear nail polish before application. However, there are preventative steps you can take to keep your nails intact. When those patches, called keratin granulations, come off, they can leave you with an "uneven, discolored, and peeling nail," says New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Dr. During removal, you can risk peeling off layers of your natural nail if you're too rough. Keep in mind, though: While they’re super convenient, press-ons are not necessarily damage-free. Plus, the glue quality has gotten better, too, which means today's fake nails last much longer than the press-ons of yesteryear. They also come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and thicknesses. This new generation of press-on nails give an effect nearly identical to expensive gel manicures at the salon. Unlike other games, it's not a matter of killing anything that moves. One of the most stressful things about playing We Happy Few is simply learning to survive in this world. It's both frightening and fascinating, where you watch people gleefully tear each other apart, cheerfully oblivious to the grim reality of their actions.
